Kovil Kulam, or Temple Tanks, are storage reservoirs for ground and rainwater that is collected through a system of channels. This is one of many rainwater harvesting techniques that are still used in India today. Many rural communities depend on these techniques instead of modern water infrastructure, which can be less reliable. Some of these Kovi Kulam have carved animals marking different volumes of water in the tank.
