Honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW): Indigenous Organizations

Our mission is to stop violence against Native women and children by advocating for social change in our communities. Organized in 1996 by three founding Native women, Peggy Bird (Kewa), Darlene Correa (Laguna Pueblo) and Genne James (Navajo), the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Native Women (CSVANW) was created to provide support to other Native advocates working in domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, stalking and sex trafficking in New Mexico’s tribal

MMIWG2ST stands for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit, and Trans Folks; this acronym is inclusive to the queer relatives in Indigenous communities. A branch of the Indigenous Community Center of Lawrence KS.

The Charley Project profiles over 14,000 “cold case” missing people mainly from the United States. It does not actively investigate cases; it is merely a publicity vehicle for missing people who are often neglected by the press and forgotten all too soon. A person must have been missing for at least one year to be listed; see the FAQ for additional information on the site, its goals, and its founder/administrator.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their communities.
American Indian and Alaska Native people are at a disproportionate risk of experiencing violence, murder, or going missing and make up a significant portion of the missing and murdered cases. The Missing and Murdered Unit within the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services (BIA-OJS) investigates missing and murdered cases in pursuit of justice for those impacted by violence.

This website highlights the Census Bureau's relationship with tribal governments and provides important American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) and tribal resources. The Census Bureau collects data for the AIAN population and publishes specific counts, estimates, and statistics.

Founded in 1944, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) is the oldest, largest, and most representative American Indian and Alaska Native organization serving the broad interests of tribal governments and communities. In this project, the Nebraska Commission on Indian Affairs, representatives of Nebraska’s four Indian Tribes, and researchers at the University of Nebraska, Omaha partnered to conduct a statewide study to determine how to increase state criminal justice protective and investigative resources for reporting and identifying missing Native women and children in Nebraska. he Department of Justice is committed to addressing the persistent violence endured by Native American families and communities across the country, including by working with Tribal nations to address the important issues of missing or murdered indigenous persons. The Department views this work as a priority for its law enforcement components.
