Kristina Shiroma is a doctoral student in the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin researching how aging adults share, search, and adopt information. She is interested in information as it applies to cross-cultural gerontology and socio-cultural aspects of health in aging populations. Kristina earned her Master's degree in Library and Information Studies from Texas Woman's University.
From Kristina:
"I put together this pathfinder to assist you in finding information that helps you understand and identify social welfare issues facing elders. I hope this information will assist you in your academic journey while writing papers and creating community-based programs, and also when you look ahead to educational and professional opportunities through conferences and scholarships."
Information sources in this LibGuide will assist students in their first steps to locate information and perspectives of indigenous elder health and social welfare issues. The limited scope of this LibGuide includes cursory information sources on social welfare issues pertaining to elders within North American indigenous communities for writing papers or creating community-based projects. I have provided professional and financial resources to encourage next steps for a career path in serving the social welfare of elders. This LibGuide is not comprehensive and should only be used as a touchpoint for information searching.
The care of culture includes the care and social welfare of elders. As a student interested in social work, community health, and/or Indigenous and American Indian studies, you have an opportunity to serve an invaluable population within your community. Elders can provide a unique point of wisdom for communities that goes beyond the information in books. Resources often needed for our elders include legal assistance, companion support, health care assistance, family advocates, and financial assistance.
