Haskell History: Monographs

Boarding School Seasons looks at the experiences of children at three off-reservation Indian boarding schools in the early years of the twentieth century, specifically Carlisle Indian Industrial School, Flandreau Indian School, and Haskell Indian Nations University. The book studies the boarding school experience through letters from residents of these schools. The print version of the book features an index, but the online version instead features a search box within the online platform. The search feature can be found on the left hand side of the box where the text of the book is displayed in the shape of a magnifying glass.

While Boarding School Seasons tells a broader story of the boarding school experience, Voices from Haskell focuses specifically on Haskell students. Vučković includes letters, diaries, and first-hand sources from boarding school students to show their struggle retaining their identity in an assimilating environment. While there is an index at the end, it mainly features subjects mentioned in the books, like health conditions, subjects taught, and other aspects of living at Haskell. The letters and individual accounts are woven into the narrative rather than fully displayed in the book.
